The Drama Expands
“I had hoped for 15…and got 85!”

The Divine DramaPastor Paul Oman of Trinity Lutheran Church in Birchwood, Wisconsin enjoyed record turnouts when he introduced his congregation to The Divine Drama.

How did he do it? Pastor Oman says, “I believe it’s because I used a non-threatening approach. I aimed to establish a comfort level with people that helped alleviate any intimidation or hesitation they might have about participating in a Bible study.”

“When I introduced the class, I told people three main things:
  1. You will never be put on the spot!
  2. You can participate as actively or as passively as you choose – at your comfort level!
  3. You may be a first-timer to Bible study or well-versed in Scripture. Either way, come! Invite a friend!
“People were told that they could just come, sit back, and not say a word. Or they could ask as many questions as they wanted.”

“I advertised The Divine Drama extensively in our community, with posters in the post office, gas stations, bars, grocery stores, the bank, and all the churches in our area. In all of the publicity, we posed two questions:
  • Have you always wanted to learn more about the Bible but were afraid of being intimidated by your lack of Bible knowledge?
  • Is studying through the entire Bible a life goal for you?
“There was a strong ecumenical emphasis in these announcements.

“During a sermon one Sunday, I projected one of the TDD graphics on the wall and talked about Genesis 1 through 11. This helped people see in advance how the class would be presented. I then concluded that sermon by asking people to take a few minutes to talk with a person next to them in their pew and explain Genesis 1-11 to one another. Once again I emphasized that I was asking them to do this only if they felt comfortable with it.

“Consequently, Trinity Lutheran has 85 people immersed in The Divine Drama. We have a Thursday morning class, which 60 attend. A repeat of the Thursday’s lesson is offered on Sunday morning, with 25 enrolled. And guess what? Class attendance is often even higher, when people choose to repeat a lesson a second time for review.

“Yes, I believe the non-threatening approach and the establishment of a comfort level for each person are the ingredients for success,” concludes Pastor Oman.
